Using data from the New York City police department, WNYC mapped all street stops by police that resulted in the recovery of a gun last year.

WNYC’s John Keefe explains how he created the map:

I built the map using TileMill from Mapbox, which I’ve been playing with for some months now. […] Besides providing wonderful control over styles and colors, TileMill solves an important problem: New York City has roughly 38,500 census blocks — and loading the data to draw them all onto a Google map will anger any browser. With TileMill, you bake the data into individual image tiles, which get served up to the user as they zoom and pan.

On his blog, Keefe also offers bundles of the NYPD data he used to make the map, and a description of how he worked with the data itself.
