SRCCON Happens This Week, August 3 & 4
Here’s what we’ve brought you from the SRCCON 2016 archives, plus what to expect from this year’s docs
With SRCCON 2017 happening this week in Minneapolis, we’ve been revisiting last year’s sessions—opening up our archives of transcripts and notes, and checking in with the facilitators about their reflections and thoughts.
Here’s what we gathered for you:
Illustrating Investigations: Many participants called out Dolly Li and Allison McCartney’s SRCCON 2016 session on illustrating complex, abstract ideas as one of their favorites of the whole event. Luckily, their session was also very well documented, so it was an obvious choice for our showcase of sessions from previous years.
Keeping Data Stories Human: One of the SRCCON 2016 sessions that attendees talked about most was this one, facilitated by William Wolfe-Wylie and based on his experience working on the CBC News project, “Missing and Murdered: The Unsolved Cases of Indigenous Women and Girls.”
Building a Culture of Documentation: Last year’s SRCCON participants got a lot out of Lauren Rabaino & Kelsey Scherer’s docs session, and we’ve found ourselves returning to the transcript more than once.
Accessibility in Media: The session on accessibility and media run by Joanna S. Kao and John Burn-Murdoch in 2016 was one of our favorites, and deals with one of those topics that hovers at the fringe of most newsroom-dev conversations.
Through an iPhone Darkly: Joe Germuska’s well-loved session on science fiction gathered presenters for short talks on real and imagined futures, and was especially focused on prescient representations of media, culture, and interconnectivity.
Every Day I’m Juggling: This session hit upon a topic that’s only gotten more urgent for newsrooms since last year—working on all the priorities, pleasing all the people. It led to some cathartic conversations and a batch of new pro tips for jugglers everywhere.
