Projects from the OpenNews-MIT Hack Day
Six data liberation projects in twenty-four hours
On the weekend leading into the Knight-MIT Civic Media Conference, Knight-Mozilla OpenNews and MIT sponsored a hack day focused on data liberation and housed at the MIT Media Lab. Fueled by korma and coffee, the 40 participants worked through six projects, detailed below in their various stages of semi-completion.
CivOmega: Wolfram Alpha for Government Data
What: A human-friendly search for open government data to answer questions like “Which senators voted for the abortion bill?” or “How many Dominicans live in Queens?” Components include NLP, mapping a query to data, and determining possibilities for outputs.

NYC Drug Prices Comparison
What: Wouldn’t it be cool if we could make an iPhone app that tells someone the cheapest place to buy a certain drug? How about a visualization of drug prices in NYC? This idea is taken straight out of a link in the Hack Day wiki: https://apps.health.ny.gov/pdpw/SearchDrugs/Home.action

Judgmental: Court Decision Scraper and API
What: Lots of states put their court decisions online as PDFs. We created a scraper that will gather them up and pop up an API to display them.

What: We’re creating a single archive of things people want to know about news websites, the stories they tell, the format they’re presented in, and the reactions they elicit. By putting this information on a single open site, we hope that people will be encouraged to make comparisons of news organizations across time, topic, and geography.
